A year ago, the Transition looked like it would be grounded before it ever took flight when U.S. regulators decreed that the vehicle would have to undergo design changes that would cost nearly $20 million before getting a passing grade for commercial release. But in December, the Defense Department announced a $60 million project to develop a Humvee-like flying military vehicle, bringing Terrafugia along for the ride as a subcontractor and putting the Transition back in business.
There have been scores of attempts to build an actual flying car since the 1920s but none has ever entered mass production. Now Terrafugia, a company founded in 2006 by MIT graduates led by Carl Dietrich, is taking its stab at breaking the decades-long jinx with its Transition "roadable aircraft."
